The Old Bakery Tea Room is a stunning building in Newark, Nottinghamshire.

The building is estimated to have been built in the late 12th century, and it's been used as a bakery for more than 100 years!

If the setting is as important as the food, then The Old Bakery Tea Rooms is full of character and atmosphere.

The bakehouse is a medieval timber-framed building, and the only one of three shops to survive when the surrounding area was redeveloped in the 1970s.

It's also reputed to be haunted, after reports of a ghost of a little girl!

Afternoon tea is served here from Monday to Saturday, and it's advisable to pre-book.

The food can be adapted to make it gluten and dairy-free and vegetarian.

It's been a bakery for more than 100 years, and you can sometimes see the owner emerging from the kitchen with plates of fruit, cheese or cherry scones still warm from the oven.

It's a traditional sort of place, with lovely flowers on each table.

The meringues and scones are unusually big, and customers get competitive when supplies dwindle at the end of the day.

The tea room has a solid four stars on TripAdvisor, with positive reviews in abundance.

One person wrote: "Wow! What a find. We were wandering around the lovely town and stumbled upon this great find. Fabulous surroundings and its beverages and food were 1st class."

Another review, from last year, says: "This is a must if visiting Newark. Very friendly service and I can honestly say it was the best pot of tea I have had in a long time. The actual building is so pretty with wooden beams and nice décor."

During your visit, it's definitely worth going to Newark Castle, which has a huge influence on the unique character of the town.

Though the current remains were built in the early 12th century, there has been a castle on the site since 1068.

Left in ruins by a turbulent history, the grounds were landscaped in 1887.

Other attractions near the historic town include the Newark Air Museum – home to 65 aircraft and cockpit sections. It's also home to the National Civil War Centre.

The town itself has become famous for its six annual antiques fairs, held at Newark County Showground.

Thousands of antique hunters from across the world descend on the fair’s 4,000 stalls in search of a bargain.
